There are often only a few neonatal nurses working in each hospital. This often means that you have to be available to work very long hours if you want to work in the neonatal field. Be sure that you are going to be ready to work 12 or even 16-hour shifts if you want to go into the neonatal field.

There are some people who find neonatal nursing to be very difficult emotionally because it can be so draining. You often become very close to the babies while they are in your care and once they are healthy enough to leave the hospital, you will have to say goodbye to them, regardless how attached you may have become. This is hard for some people because they are not able to separate their emotions from the job that they are doing.
Neonatal Nurses Often Make More than Other Nurses
When you specialize in neonatal care, you often make more annually than a regular RN. There is also often a lot of opportunity for career advancement in the neonatal field because you are not competing against as many nurses as traditional nurses do.
It will take some time to become comfortable working as a neonatal nurse because there is so much that you have to know how to do. There are often other nurses that work with you that can help you as needed until you get the hang of things though.
