There are several tests that can be used to determine if you have breast cancer. If your doctor suspects you could have breast cancer, these are some of the tests that your doctor may perform.
Mammogram
The most common test is a mammogram, which is an X-ray of the breasts. This image can help your doctor identify any lumps or changes in the breast tissue. If anything suspicious is found, your doctor may recommend further testing.
Mammograms can be slightly uncomfortable. During the test, your breasts are compressed between two plates while the X-ray is taken. This helps to get a clear image of your breast tissue.
Breast Ultrasound
A breast ultrasound uses sound waves to create an image of your breast tissue. This test is often used along with a mammogram to get a closer look at any suspicious areas. The doctor will look for lumps and other abnormalities.
The process of getting an ultrasound includes applying gel to the skin and then using a device called a transducer to send sound waves into the breast. The sound waves bounce off the tissue and create an image on a monitor. It is a relatively simple process.
Breast MRI
A breast MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves to create a detailed image of the breast tissue. This test is usually only used when other tests, such as a mammogram or breast ultrasound, show something abnormal.
An MRI can be a difficult type of procedure for some people. You will need to lie still in a small, enclosed space for some period of time. The machine makes a loud noise, so earplugs are usually provided
Biopsy
If any of the tests above show something abnormal, your doctor may recommend a biopsy. This is a procedure where a small sample of tissue is removed from the breast and examined. The tissue sample may be removed with a needle or through surgery.
